Care for Your Curbing

CURING: Your curbing will be dry to the touch within 3 hours. At this point it can withstand rain. Your landscape curbing can be damaged if you bump it within the first 24 hours. Please take care to make sure pets, children, and guests do not step on your brand new curbing installation. If your curbing is damaged by rain, we will repair it at our cost within 20 days. If your curbing was covered with plastic – this was to protect it from the rain. The plastic can be removed and disposed of 24 hours after the installation was complete.

STAINING or SEALING: Landscape curbing is sealed with Lil’ Bubba® UV CurbCure™ 350, offering excellent protection form the weather short term while also sealing the Lil’ Bubba CurbColor™ for up to 2 years. We recommend having us return to re-seal your curbing on an 18 month cycle. DO NOT apply any other sealer that may be found in your local hardware store as it may have adverse affect on the properties of the colored concrete curb beyond repair.
PREVENT DAMAGE: Concrete landscape curbing will provide you with years of enjoyment with the slightest amount of care. However, it is important that you understand that regardless of its durability, it is not indestructible. Pushing a full wheelbarrow over your landscape curbing may in fact lead to cracking or breaking. Running over your edging with an automobile of any size will most likely cause cracking and breaking to occur. Warn your landscaper not to scrape the curbing with any portion of the mower, which may leave unsightly scuffs, scratches or other forms of damage. Use only a string trimmer when trimming grass that comes into contact with any surface of your curbing. Over time, tree roots may lift and/or break your curbing. To avoid this as much as possible, we place “control joints” in curbing that may lie near trees. The reason for the “control joints” is should this occur, we are able to remove and replace only the damaged section without affecting the rest of the curbing. We will then remove the broken area, shave or cut the roots impacting the path and replace the section restoring the curbing’s initial beauty.
EFFLORESCENCE or COLOR FADING: We seal your curbing with a specially formulated Lil’ Bubba CurbCure™ 350 sealer. This immediately provides protection for your curbing. Sealing is especially important when using colored concrete. Calcium carbonate deposits can form on the surface of the curbing due to a natural reaction between carbon dioxide and the free lime in cement, often referred to as “efflorescence”. As a result, colored curbing may appear faded. Using Lil’ Bubba CurbCure™ 350 sealer along side a special additive in the concrete called Lil’ Bubba CurbGuard+ virtually all efflorescence is avoided. The sealed curbing will appear somewhat glossy at first, but this will ease to a nice matte finish once completely cured.
WATER RETENTION: In extremely wet areas or during extended periods of heavy rain, your curbing may retain water in your garden(s). Your first option is to drill several small holes into the base of the your curbing, using a 6in. or longer, 1/4in. masonry drill bit. Your second option is to dig a small channel under your curbing carefully. DO NOT lift or pry upward while digging this channel. After your channel has been created, place a 6in. piece of PVC pipe with an elbow at each end in the channel, backfilling around the pipe to secure it into place. This will allow water to flow under the curbing, draining any retained inside the curbing edge. From time to time you may need to check that the PVC pipe is clear of any debris or build-up.
CLEANING: Lil’ Bubba® UV CurbCure™ 350 seals the surface sufficiently to deter most algae and mold growth. If mold and/or mildew does appear anywhere on your curbing it can be removed with a strong bleach and water solution to kill mold/mildew spores. Wait 24 hours, then wash off with a spray nozzle attached to your hose. A stiff scrubbing brush may be needed for stubborn areas. Pressure washing your curbing is not recommended as it can seriously damage the surface of your curb. If more than 18 months has elapsed since your curb was sealed, you should schedule a service call with us to re-seal your curbing to prevent recurring growth. It closes the pores of the concrete giving mold and/or mildew nothing to attach to.
